Rosneft Condemns EU Sanctions on India’s Refinery
On Friday, the EU declared restrictions targeting the Vadinar refinery, which is owned by Nayara Energy — a joint Indo-Russian enterprise in which Rosneft holds a 49% share.
In an official statement released Sunday, Rosneft declared, “Rosneft Oil Company considers the European Union’s decision to impose restrictive measures on the Indian refinery of Nayara Energy as unjustified and illegal.”
The company further described the sanctions as an example of “extraterritorial implementation of politically motivated restrictions that blatantly violate international law and infringe on the economic interests of a sovereign state.”
The Russian oil giant also accused the EU of practicing unfair competitive tactics with the sanctions imposed on Nayara Energy, framing them as politically charged and economically damaging.
Alongside this latest measure, the EU unveiled its 18th set of sanctions against Russia related to the Ukraine conflict, which also included penalties on India’s flag registry — the official register of ships flying the country’s flag.
The Vadinar refinery boasts an annual processing capacity of 20 million tons.
According to reports from various media outlets, the EU is a significant purchaser of the Russian crude oil refined at Vadinar.
