Russians allocates millions for Labubu toys

(MENAFN) Russians have spent more than 1.5 billion rubles ($17.6 million) this year on Labubu toys, according to data from e-commerce platform Wildberries & Russ, as reported by TASS.

Labubu, a quirky elf-like character with sharp teeth, was created by Hong Kong designer Kasing Lung for his book The Monsters. It became a global collectible phenomenon after Chinese brand Pop Mart introduced it in blind box form in 2019. The toy's popularity skyrocketed in 2024 after Thai-born K-pop star Lisa showcased the dolls on Instagram, sparking a wave of celebrity interest. Pop icons like Rihanna and Kim Kardashian, as well as former football star David Beckham, further boosted its status by sharing their own Labubu collections.

Wildberries introduced Labubu-themed products in July 2024, but sales remained modest until this May, when demand surged by 4,700% compared to April, generating tens of millions of rubles. The upward trend continued in June, with sales jumping another 1,190%, bringing total revenue close to 1 billion rubles ($11.1 million) that month alone. Since January 1, Labubu-related sales on Wildberries have totaled 1.582 billion rubles ($17.6 million). Wildberries noted that roughly one in ten Russians has purchased a Labubu through its platform.

The toy’s sudden rise has sparked concern among some Russian lawmakers. Federation Council official Ekaterina Altabaeva and MP Vitaly Milonov have called for a ban, arguing that Labubu’s “monster-like” appearance might harm children. Another lawmaker, Tatyana Butskaya, pointed to improper labeling on some products and demanded stricter oversight.

However, Roskachestvo, Russia’s quality watchdog, confirmed the toys meet safety standards and described Labubu as a harmless, “kind, toothy elf.” Pediatric experts have also said there’s no proof the toys pose psychological risks, emphasizing the importance of parental guidance
