Pope Leo Holds Call with Palestinian Leader on Gaza Crisis

(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV spoke by phone on Monday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to address the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the rising violence in the West Bank, according to media.

In a statement released during the call, the Vatican emphasized the Pope’s unwavering appeal for adherence to international humanitarian standards and the safeguarding of civilians.

"The Holy Father repeated his appeal for international humanitarian law to be fully respected, emphasizing in particular the obligation to protect civilians and sacred places, the prohibition of the indiscriminate use of force and the forced transfer of the population," the press release stated.

With what the Vatican referred to as a “tragic humanitarian situation” unfolding, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the critical need for swift humanitarian assistance.

"Emphasis was placed on the urgent need to provide assistance to those most vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and to allow the adequate entry of humanitarian aid," the statement continued.

The call also commemorated a key diplomatic milestone, as both leaders acknowledged the tenth anniversary of formal ties between the Holy See and Palestine. The pope "recalled the auspicious tenth anniversary of the Comprehensive Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Palestine, signed on 26 June 2015, which entered into force on 2 January 2016," the Vatican noted.
