Blistering Heatwave Batters Italy
Officials predict that temperatures will stay well above seasonal norms throughout the week, with several areas—including Puglia, Basilicata, Sardinia, and Sicily—likely to experience highs over 42°C (108°F).
Central Italy will also feel the heat, with cities like Rome and Florence expecting daytime highs approaching 36°C (97°F).
Filippo Anelli, president of Italy’s National Federation of the Orders of Physicians, stressed the importance of “maximum attention” for vulnerable populations, specifically the elderly and those with chronic health conditions during the extreme heat.
Conversely, northern Italy is bracing for volatile weather due to the collision between the advancing African heat and a low-pressure system lingering over northern Europe. This interaction is expected to generate severe thunderstorms, hail, and heavy rainfall, especially across the Alps and Prealps.
Italy’s meteorological services have described this stark contrast in weather as “a clear sign of an exceptionally extreme summer,” highlighting the nation’s struggle with simultaneous scorching heat and violent storms.
