Bombay HC Exonerates All 12 in 2006 Mumbai Train Bombings

(MENAFN) In a landmark judgment on Monday, the Bombay High Court overturned the convictions of all 12 individuals found guilty in connection with the 2006 Mumbai train bombings, including five who had been sentenced to death, according to officials.

The court determined that the prosecution had entirely failed to substantiate its case against the accused, and therefore annulled the verdict delivered by the special Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) court on September 30, 2015, due to lack of evidence supporting the convictions.

"The prosecution has utterly failed to prove the case against the accused. It is hard to believe that the accused committed the crime. Hence, their conviction is quashed and set aside," the Bombay High Court stated.

The bench raised serious concerns about the credibility of certain prosecution witnesses and expressed doubts over the legitimacy of the Test Identification Parade involving some of the accused. Following this, the court ordered their immediate release—provided they are not being held in connection with any other legal matter.

It also noted that the arms, explosives, and maps recovered during the probe seemed disconnected from the attacks. Additionally, the prosecution was unable to clearly identify the type of explosives used in the coordinated bombings.

The deadly attacks occurred on July 11, 2006, when seven blasts ripped through Mumbai’s suburban train network within a 10-minute window during peak evening travel hours. The explosions claimed 189 lives and left more than 800 people injured in India's commercial and entertainment hub.

The blasts took place near the Matunga Road, Mahim Junction, Bandra, Khar Road, Jogeshwari, Bhayandar, and Borivali stations.

A special trial court in 2015 had convicted 12 individuals for their alleged roles in the incident.
