Erdogan has meeting with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus counterpart
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met on Sunday with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate. Details of the meeting have not yet been disclosed.
Erdogan arrived in the TRNC to participate in events marking the 51st anniversary of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, also known as Peace and Freedom Day. He was received with an official welcoming ceremony at Ercan Airport by President Tatar.
As part of his visit, Erdogan joined Tatar in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Atatürk Monument. The two leaders observed a moment of silence and sang the national anthem before the wreath was placed. The event was attended by TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Parliament Speaker Ziya Öztürkler, and Turkish Ambassador to Lefkosa, Ali Murat Başçeri.
Erdogan was accompanied by a high-level delegation including Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu, Deputy Parliament Speaker Bekir Bozdağ, Communications Director Burhanettin Duran, and Chief Presidential Adviser Akif Çağatay Kılıç.
The island of Cyprus remains divided between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots following decades of conflict. Tensions date back to the 1960s, when intercommunal violence forced Turkish Cypriots into enclaves. In 1974, Türkiye launched a military operation in response to a Greek-led coup aiming to annex the island, leading to the establishment of the TRNC in 1983.
Despite repeated UN-led efforts, a comprehensive political solution to the Cyprus issue has yet to be reached.
