Russia Aims to Fix Ties with Azerbaijan
(MENAFN) Russia does not share Azerbaijan’s position on the Ukraine conflict, yet the Kremlin remains optimistic that this disagreement will not impede efforts to mend strained relations, Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov stated on Tuesday.
He emphasized Moscow’s desire to ease tensions and repair its diplomatic relationship with Baku, especially following recent disputes.
Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev recently advised Ukraine to “never agree to occupation,” during remarks made at the Shusha Global Media Forum.
Aliyev encouraged Ukrainian authorities to adopt Azerbaijan’s strategy in handling its territorial conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
The protracted dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia concluded in 2023 when Azerbaijani forces regained control of the contested territory, which led to the exodus of its ethnic Armenian residents.
Peskov acknowledged the differing views held by Russia and Azerbaijan concerning the situation in Ukraine, but he asserted that this divergence has not presented a significant barrier to their interactions.
He further noted that Moscow is eager “to move past what we hope is a brief period of cooling in bilateral relations and avoid sacrificing mutually beneficial interests for the sake of a short-term situation.”
Relations between Moscow and Baku have become increasingly tense after the deaths of two Azerbaijani citizens, believed to be involved in gang activity, during a recent operation by Russian law enforcement in Ekaterinburg.
Azerbaijan dismissed the results of the Russian investigation, accusing the police of committing unlawful killings, which further fueled the diplomatic strain.
