Wrong body remains get sent to son’s victim of Air India plane crash
Miten Patel, whose father also died in the crash, told a news agency that a UK coroner identified the mix-up, leaving him to question, "How many others are in there?"
The plane, which was bound for Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, western India, on June 12, killing all 260 people on board. Ashok and Shobhana Patel were among the first victims repatriated to the UK, where they were returning to visit their sons and grandchildren.
Patel said the situation was very upsetting, even though he acknowledged that mistakes can happen. "People were tired and there was a lot of pressure. But there has to be a level of responsibility that you're sending the right bodies to the UK," he said.
Another news agency reported two cases in which the wrong remains were allegedly returned to families. In one instance, a family reportedly received the wrong body entirely. In another, multiple individuals' remains were said to have been placed in the same casket.
India’s foreign ministry said all remains were handled with "utmost professionalism" and dignity, and added that it is working with UK officials to address the concerns.
