Under Turkey’s agreement: Russia, Ukraine hold third phase of negotiations

(MENAFN) Russia announced on Wednesday that, following agreements made in Istanbul, it and Ukraine have conducted a new round of prisoner exchanges involving military personnel.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that "a group of Russian servicemen" was returned from Ukrainian-controlled territory but did not provide exact numbers.

"On July 23, in accordance with Russian-Ukrainian agreements reached on June 2 in Istanbul, a group of Russian servicemen was returned from territory controlled by the Kyiv regime. In exchange, a group of Ukrainian Armed Forces prisoners was transferred," the ministry stated.

The Russian soldiers returned are currently in neighboring Belarus, where they are receiving psychological and medical care.

"All Russian servicemen will be transported to Russia for treatment and rehabilitation at medical facilities of the Russian Defense Ministry," the ministry added.

In return, a group of Ukrainian prisoners of war was sent back to Kyiv.

At a press conference in Istanbul after the third round of peace talks, Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian delegation, said about 250 prisoners from each side were part of the exchange.

"Currently, on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, the final batches of prisoners of war, amounting to approximately 250 persons per side, are being exchanged. Thus, the second unprecedented large-scale exchange of roughly 1,200 individuals has been completed," he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the swap, reporting that more than 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers were returned through this humanitarian effort.

Zelenskyy added that some of the soldiers had been held captive in Russia for as long as three years and that they would receive both medical treatment and psychological support.
