Kremlin shares anticipations for upcoming Ukraine discussions
(MENAFN) The Kremlin has downplayed hopes for any major breakthroughs in the upcoming round of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, set to take place this week in Istanbul. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Tuesday that while Moscow hopes the talks will proceed soon, no exact date has been confirmed yet.
Peskov acknowledged the complexity of the situation, saying there is “no reason to expect miraculous breakthroughs.” However, he dismissed the notion that the discussions would be futile, highlighting past progress—such as agreements on prisoner exchanges and the repatriation of soldiers’ remains—as concrete results of earlier sessions.
The upcoming talks are expected to build on previous draft memorandums exchanged by both delegations, along with other agenda items.
Peskov reiterated Russia’s aim to secure its core objectives, stating that the country remains committed to fulfilling its original goals. When asked about a potential timeline for a peace agreement, he cautioned against making predictions, citing the numerous unpredictable factors at play.
