Kremlin clarifies media press restrictions
In an interview published Friday by Expert magazine, Peskov explained that Moscow has enacted laws to curb the intentional spread of false information, particularly about military operations. He called this period one of “military censorship,” emphasizing that the conflict extends beyond the battlefield and into the media space.
“It would be irresponsible to ignore outlets that deliberately seek to damage Russia’s image,” Peskov said, adding that such regulations are appropriate under current circumstances.
Many independent Russian media outlets have relocated abroad since 2022, citing safety concerns. Peskov specifically criticized Latvia-based Meduza, accusing it of portraying Russia only in a negative light. The outlet was designated a “foreign agent” in 2021 due to its external funding.
Peskov acknowledged that a time may come when media policy will need to become more balanced and open, and said the Kremlin hopes to see the rise of neutral platforms that report both successes and shortcomings. However, he emphasized that Russia won’t repeat past mistakes by allowing what it considers hostile media to operate unchecked.
He also commented on the current trend in Russian journalism, which he described as heavily skewed toward patriotic and positive narratives. Peskov claimed this reflects public demand more than government directives but admitted that some outlets have likely gone too far. He cited a Russian proverb: “Teach a fool to pray to God, and he’ll smash his forehead,” implying excessive zeal.
Peskov also pointed out that Western countries backing Ukraine have imposed similar media restrictions on Russian outlets, such as banning RT and removing its content from social media. He argued these actions contradict the West’s proclaimed commitment to free speech and reveal a readiness to silence dissenting perspectives.
