TSMC becomes first Asian firm to hit one trillion market value
The company’s rapid rise is driven by the soaring global demand for cutting-edge AI chips, placing TSMC among an elite group of trillion-dollar companies that includes US tech giants like Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta. Outside of the US, only Saudi Arabia’s national oil company, Saudi Aramco, shares this exclusive club.
TSMC is a crucial player in the global technology supply chain, producing semiconductors for major American firms such as Nvidia and Apple. North American customers accounted for about 70% of TSMC’s total revenue in 2024, according to estimates. Recently, the company boosted its forecast for full-year revenue growth to roughly 30%.
Earlier this year, former US President Donald Trump threatened tariffs of up to 100% on imported semiconductors—including those from Taiwan—to promote domestic manufacturing. However, when these so-called ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs were introduced in April, semiconductors were excluded.
In March, TSMC announced a substantial expansion of its investment in the US, committing an extra $100 billion in addition to a prior $65 billion pledge for advanced chip manufacturing facilities in Phoenix, Arizona. The company described this as the “largest-ever single foreign direct investment in US history.”
Taiwan, while self-governed, is claimed by China as part of its territory. Beijing remains firm on reunification and opposes foreign involvement in the region.
