Poland instructs nationals to leave Russia

(MENAFN) Poland’s Foreign Ministry has issued a strong advisory urging Polish citizens currently in Russia to leave the country if circumstances allow. The warning, posted on the ministry’s website, reflects the worsening diplomatic rift between Warsaw and Moscow, largely driven by the Ukraine conflict and mutual diplomatic restrictions.

The advisory discourages all travel to Russia, citing security concerns, including Poland’s designation by Moscow as a “hostile state.” Russia added Poland to its list of “unfriendly states” in 2022 due to Warsaw’s alignment with Western sanctions and strong backing of Ukraine. This designation enables Russia to impose limitations on Polish diplomatic missions and restrict trade and financial interactions.

The ministry advised Poles to exit Russia via any available private or commercial means, unless they have compelling personal, family, or professional reasons to remain.

Compounding the situation, Polish authorities cautioned that reduced diplomatic operations could hinder consular assistance, possibly forcing Polish nationals to travel long distances for services. Other issues include suspended direct flights between the two countries, limited transportation alternatives, and problems using Polish bank cards within Russia.

The ministry also warned of the risk of "arbitrary detention" for Polish nationals, although no recent high-profile detentions have been reported.

Diplomatic ties have further deteriorated since 2022. In May, Poland shut down the Russian consulate in Krakow, accusing Moscow of involvement in a fire at a Warsaw shopping mall earlier that year—an allegation the Kremlin denied. In retaliation, Russia announced the closure of Poland’s consulate in Kaliningrad, effective at the end of August, citing Warsaw's “hostile actions.”
