OIC calls on UN security to end genocide in Gaza
Speaking during an open debate on the Middle East situation, Türkiye’s UN representative Ahmet Yildiz expressed disappointment over the lack of tangible results from recent ceasefire negotiations, stating that the continued delays have left Palestinians—especially in Gaza—exposed to ongoing violence and hardship.
"It is regrettable that the glimmers of hope which follow the recent negotiations and proximity talks on a permanent ceasefire in Gaza have not produced immediate results, thereby leaving the Palestinian people, especially in Gaza, to face the continuing horrors of this illegal occupation," he said.
He warned that the conditions in Gaza are rapidly deteriorating and that each day brings new civilian casualties. He described the humanitarian situation as “unbearable and life-threatening.”
Representing the OIC, Yildiz condemned what he characterized as acts of “genocide, forced displacement, starvation and destruction perpetrated by the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip,” asserting that these actions amount to “war crimes and crimes against humanity.”
"This calculated strategy aimed at forcibly displacing the indigenous Palestinian civilian population of Gaza represents an unprovoked violation of fundamental human rights and all norms of international law and international humanitarian law," he stated.
He urged the Security Council to fulfill its core mandate of preserving global peace and stability, emphasizing that the current moment is critical to the long-running conflict in the region.
Turning to Syria, Yildiz relayed the OIC’s condemnation of what it described as ongoing violations of Syrian sovereignty by Israel, voicing full support for Syria’s right to self-defense.
In his national role, Yildiz noted that Türkiye, as a co-chair of discussions supporting the two-state solution, encourages all member states to reinvest in collective diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region—including full UN membership for Palestine.
