Iraqi PM, U.S. Rubio Hold Talks on Key Issues

(MENAFN) Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani engaged in a critical phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the state of bilateral ties and pressing regional developments, according to al-Sudani’s media office on Wednesday.

In the conversation, al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s commitment to stabilizing the region, upholding ceasefire agreements, and putting an end to hostile acts, the official statement revealed.

He further highlighted recent assaults on key oil facilities and vital infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region, as well as in Salahuddin and Kirkuk provinces, labeling these attacks as "deliberate attempts to undermine Iraq's national economy."

Al-Sudani assured that Iraqi security forces are vigilantly tracking the origins of these attacks in close collaboration with the U.S.-led international coalition.

The discussion also covered the coordination between Iraq’s central government and the Kurdistan Regional Government concerning the transfer of oil and non-oil revenues into the federal treasury, in line with the applicable budget law, the statement noted.

From the U.S. side, Rubio underscored the necessity for the Iraqi authorities to hold those responsible accountable and to safeguard energy infrastructure from future attacks, including facilities operated by American firms, stated the U.S. Department of State.

Rubio also emphasized the significance of ensuring salary payments in Iraqi Kurdistan and restarting oil exports through the Iraq-Türkiye Pipeline, the statement added.
