Japan Presses for U.S. Auto Tariff Reductions
(MENAFN) Japan's top trade negotiator announced Tuesday he will travel to the United States later in the day to press for the prompt implementation of agreed-upon auto tariff reductions, as outlined in a recent bilateral trade agreement, according to media.
Ryosei Akazawa, who also holds the portfolio for economic revitalization, informed a Diet committee that the goal of his visit is to ensure there are no misunderstandings regarding the terms of the tariff arrangement.
Media reported Akazawa as saying the visit is intended “to confirm that there are no discrepancies in the agreed tariff terms.”
Although the Trump administration recently agreed to lower the reciprocal tariff on Japanese imports to 15%, the timeline for applying the reduced rate remains uncertain.
Under the terms of the trade deal, Japan committed to increasing investments in the U.S. as part of a broader $550 billion economic initiative. In return, the U.S. pledged to cut tariffs on Japanese automobiles from the current 27.5% down to 15%.
Given that the auto industry remains a cornerstone of Japan’s economy, any delays in reducing tariffs could significantly impact major Japanese automakers such as Toyota and Honda, both of which are heavily dependent on the American market.
