Medvedev Blames NATO for Exit from Missile Deal

(MENAFN) On Monday, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev assigned responsibility to NATO member states for Russia's decision to end its voluntary halt on deploying short- and medium-range nuclear missiles.

Medvedev asserted that "the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement on the withdrawal of the moratorium on the deployment of medium- and short-range missiles is the result of NATO countries’ anti-Russian policy."

He further emphasized, "this is a new reality all our opponents will have to reckon with. Expect further steps." Medvedev, now acting as deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, made these comments via X.

His statements followed an announcement from Russia's Foreign Ministry declaring that Moscow "no longer considers itself bound" by its “previously adopted self-restrictions” under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

Signed in 1987, the INF Treaty obligated both the United States and the Soviet Union to dismantle and renounce all nuclear and conventional land-based ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers (310 to 3,417 miles).

The United States, under President Donald Trump's initial term, exited the treaty in 2019, accusing Moscow of violating its terms—an allegation that Russia consistently denied.

Russia’s latest move was made public after Trump last week authorized the deployment of two American nuclear submarines "close to Russia."

This action was reportedly in response to Medvedev, who has recently engaged in heated online exchanges with the US president.
