Media reports Netanyahu decides on full occupation of Gaza

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly seeking cabinet approval for a plan to fully occupy the Gaza Strip, despite resistance from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), The Times of Israel reported on Monday.

Israel previously controlled Gaza from 1967 until its withdrawal in 2005, after which the Palestinian Authority assumed governance. Hamas took control following its 2006 electoral victory, and no elections have taken place in the enclave since.

According to reports, Netanyahu has used the phrase “occupation of the Strip” in private discussions, signaling a major policy shift and a move to expand military operations. One senior source quoted by Ynet claimed: “The decision has been made—we’re going for full occupation. Operations will proceed even in areas where hostages are being held. If the IDF chief of staff objects, he should step down.”

Currently, the IDF controls about 75% of Gaza. Netanyahu’s plan would require the military to take over the remaining areas, placing the entire territory under Israeli control.

However, the IDF is reportedly opposed to the idea, warning that eliminating Hamas infrastructure across Gaza could take years. They also caution that advancing into areas where hostages are located could endanger their lives, potentially leading to executions by Hamas.

The conflict began in October 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack in southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking approximately 250 hostages. Roughly 50 hostages remain in captivity, with fewer than half believed to be alive. Israel’s military response has devastated Gaza, where local health officials estimate the death toll has surpassed 60,000.
