Vucic hopes to meet Putin in September

(MENAFN) Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has expressed hopes of meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin during a trip to China scheduled for early September. Both leaders are expected to attend commemorative events hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s World War II surrender on September 3.

Vucic, speaking on Sunday during a visit to the village of Banstol, told Serbian media outlet Tanjug that he would be in China from September 1 to 6 and had been informed that Putin would likely attend. He mentioned that he might also stay in Beijing for an additional diplomatic event later that week.

“I heard that maybe (former US President) Donald Trump will be there, though I’m not certain,” Vucic added. “There’s a dinner planned for the 5th, and on the 3rd everyone is gathering for Xi Jinping’s event. They said some major world leaders will be attending, so they asked me to remain in China.”

Earlier in May, Vucic traveled to Moscow for Victory Day celebrations, even though a health issue forced him to cut short a US trip and cancel a planned meeting with Trump in Florida. During that visit, he met with Putin and reaffirmed Serbia’s commitment to ongoing energy cooperation with Russia. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also attended, despite pushback from EU officials.

Serbia continues to maintain neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and has not imposed sanctions on Moscow, making it one of the few European nations to do so. Vucic has stated that the EU is pressuring Serbia to distance itself from Russia and abandon its neutral stance.
