Japan Reaffirms Support for Ukraine’s Pursuit of Peace
Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya delivered the pledge during talks in Tokyo with Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, according to a statement issued by Japan’s Foreign Ministry.
Iwaya assured Sybiha that Japan would “continue to support Ukraine's efforts to realize a just and lasting peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.”
The two diplomats held what the ministry described as a “candid exchange” on the conflict in Ukraine and the broader international landscape.
The renewed support from Tokyo came as Sybiha proposed collaboration in drone technology, suggesting the joint development and production of drones with Japan.
"Now we are the leaders in the world in producing drones ... We are ready to share with Japan our experience, and to cooperate in producing, for example, drones" that will be "mutually beneficial," Sybiha told media during his visit to Tokyo.
He indicated that the partnership could focus on drones used in agriculture and surveillance, in light of Japan’s constitutional restrictions on exporting military equipment.
Japan has pledged several billion dollars for Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts and has also imposed sanctions against Russia over its invasion.
Sybiha is accompanying Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska on an official visit to Japan. During the trip, he attended a forum centered on Japan’s reconstruction assistance, where 29 cooperation agreements were signed across multiple sectors.
At the Ukrainian-Japanese Forum in Tokyo, Zelenska addressed attendees, emphasizing the human toll of the war: “peaceful Ukrainians whose lives have been destroyed by missiles and drones,” according to a post on her X account.
“I am grateful to the government and people of Japan for their help and partnership. Pain can be turned into development. And we will do it,” she said.
