Media reports prosecutor who targeted Trump under investigation

(MENAFN) The U.S. Office of Special Counsel has reportedly launched an investigation into Jack Smith, the Justice Department prosecutor who led two major federal cases against former President Donald Trump, according to the New York Post.

Smith, appointed as Special Counsel during the Biden administration, headed the investigations into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Both cases resulted in criminal charges, to which Trump pleaded not guilty. However, following Trump’s victory in the November 2024 election, the cases were dropped in accordance with Justice Department rules that prohibit prosecuting a sitting president.

The investigation into Smith reportedly began after Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) sent a letter last week to acting Special Counsel Jamieson Greer, requesting an inquiry into whether Smith had engaged in politically motivated conduct intended to harm Trump’s 2024 presidential bid.

In the letter, Cotton claimed that Smith's legal actions were essentially campaign tactics for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. He accused Smith of unethical and potentially illegal behavior, including timing his prosecutions to align with major political events like the Iowa caucuses.

The investigation will look into possible violations of the Hatch Act, a federal law that prohibits most government employees from using their official positions to influence elections or engage in partisan political activity. The Washington Post confirmed that the Office of Special Counsel has opened the inquiry.

Smith, who was appointed in 2022 to oversee the Trump-related investigations, resigned from his role prior to Trump’s inauguration.
