Borrell states EU complicit in Israeli crimes through inaction
Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and over 200 hostages. Since then, more than 60,000 people—mostly civilians—have reportedly been killed in Gaza, according to the territory's Health Ministry. Israel has also faced accusations of blocking humanitarian aid deliveries.
Borrell noted that around one-third of the bombs dropped on Gaza are of European origin, indirectly implicating EU countries in the destruction.
He blamed several EU member states for resisting sanctions against Israel and criticized EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for not allowing discussions on the issue within the commission. He claimed that the EU has only sanctioned about 20 individuals in connection with illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank—a figure he compared to the thousands sanctioned over Russia’s actions.
“The sanctions being considered against Israel are laughable,” Borrell said, arguing that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions in Gaza exceed the severity of many war crimes previously condemned by the EU.
He also warned that the EU’s continued inaction could severely damage its global standing. “People are beginning to view our silence as complicity in what’s happening,” Borrell concluded.
