UN Reports Israel Killed 1,500 Gaza Aid Seekers Since May
Farhan Haq, the UN deputy spokesperson, told reporters, “The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that many people reportedly continue to be killed and injured, including people seeking food along the UN convoy routes and militarized distribution points. Some 1,500 people have been reportedly killed since May.”
Haq also revealed that a health care worker from the Palestine Red Crescent Society was killed Sunday during an Israeli airstrike in Khan Yunus, located in southern Gaza.
The aid initiative supported by the US and Israel since May 27 has faced widespread condemnation for its inefficacy and has been described as a “death trap” for civilians struggling with starvation.
When questioned by media about whether the UN secretary-general believes the organization’s credibility and effectiveness can be restored given its inability to halt Israel’s actions—including plans to expand annexation of Palestinian territories—Haq affirmed, “He certainly does.”
Highlighting the UN’s achievements, Haq pointed to “successful diplomatic negotiations” and humanitarian efforts that have helped “keep billions of people alive.” However, he underscored that a lack of international consensus, especially within the UN Security Council, severely limits the organization’s capacity to act.
The Government Media Office in Gaza reported Monday that only 674 aid trucks have been permitted entry since July 27, amounting to just 14% of the minimum daily need of 600 trucks for the territory.
The office further stated that the majority of the 80 trucks that arrived Sunday were looted, blaming Israel for creating “a deliberately engineered climate of chaos and starvation” and accusing it of weaponizing hunger to weaken Palestinian endurance.
Since Oct. 7, 2023, Israel has rejected international calls for a ceasefire and maintained an aggressive military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of nearly 61,000 Palestinians—almost half of whom are women and children. This operation has left the region devastated and on the brink of famine.
