Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries kicks off in Turkmenistan
(MENAFN) The third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC) has commenced in the Awaza National Tourist Zone of Turkmenistan.
Taking place under the theme “Driving Progress Through Partnerships,” the conference will run until August 8 and marks the first LLDC meeting since the previous one in Vienna, Austria, in 2014.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres officially opened the event, announcing that Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedov will serve as the conference chair. Berdimuhamedov highlighted Turkmenistan’s policies and initiatives aimed at fostering international cooperation during his opening remarks.
The conference agenda includes parliamentary, youth, civil society, and high-level roundtable sessions, with numerous leaders, officials, and experts expected to participate. Türkiye is represented by Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu.
The UN notes that LLDCs face significant challenges in trade, connectivity, and development due to their lack of direct access to the sea, which makes them dependent on transit countries, leading to increased costs and delays.
This conference serves as a platform to build effective partnerships intended to unlock the development potential of these countries. Currently, 32 nations are classified by the UN as landlocked developing countries, collectively home to around 600 million people.
