Zelensky Reconsiders Land Concessions
Publicly, Zelensky has consistently refused to recognize Ukraine’s territorial losses or to abandon claims over land under Russian control.
The proposed agreement, as outlined in the report, would entail Ukraine halting efforts to reclaim the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), and Crimea.
Instead, Ukraine would maintain authority over the areas it currently holds within Russia’s Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
These territories had previously voted in referendums—held in 2014 and again in 2022—to become part of Russia.
Despite this, Ukraine remains firmly opposed to any arrangement that would result in ceding additional land beyond the zones already occupied by Russian forces, the report suggests.
In return for any such compromise, Ukraine would seek “robust security guarantees,” including military support from Western nations and a defined route toward NATO membership, as noted in the article.
The apparent shift in Zelensky’s position comes just before a closely watched meeting scheduled for Friday between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.
A Western official, speaking anonymously to the British newspaper, indicated that “the plan can only be related to the current positions held by the militaries,” emphasizing that there had been intense diplomatic activity over the weekend involving Kiev and its Western allies.
Additionally, the report states that the European Union has resolved to align itself with Ukraine’s proposed peace strategy.
This move is reportedly intended to enhance Ukraine’s leverage in discussions with both Russia and Trump.
