Mexico Transfers Inmates to U.S.

(MENAFN) Mexico has transferred 26 high-profile inmates to the United States in a move aimed at stopping them from continuing to wield influence over drug trafficking networks while behind bars, officials revealed during a press conference held on Wednesday.

According to the U.S. government, the individuals extradited include prominent leaders from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel, two of the most dominant criminal organizations operating in Mexico.

The announcement was made Tuesday and emphasized the significance of the handover.

Speaking at the press briefing, Mexican Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch stated that Mexico fulfilled a request made by U.S. President Donald Trump to surrender these cartel heads.

Harfuch noted that even while incarcerated, they maintained control over their criminal networks and continued orchestrating crimes such as extortion, kidnappings, and murders.

“These high-profile criminals who, even while deprived of their freedom, continued to direct illicit activities through visits -- visits that cannot be prohibited out of respect for their human rights. However, these interactions were being used to maintain criminal operations, threaten officials and expand networks of corruption and intimidation, which posed an unacceptable risk to security,” said Harfuch.

Harfuch further explained that these powerful cartel members had obtained favorable rulings from lower court judges, allowing them to serve reduced sentences and relocate to less secure detention facilities.

He emphasized that Mexico ultimately gained the most from the extradition decision, as it reduced internal security threats and disrupted cartel coordination from within the prison system.

Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero added that the group of 26 inmates joined an earlier wave of 29 extraditions carried out in January.

These transfers were conducted in response to formal requests made by the U.S. government.
