Moscow claims EU planning ‘regime change’ in Hungary
(MENAFN) The European Commission is allegedly working to remove Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban over his independent policies, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claimed on Wednesday.
According to the SVR, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is “seriously exploring regime change scenarios” in Hungary, aiming to install opposition leader Peter Magyar of the Tisza Party — described as “loyal to globalist elites” — as prime minister in the 2026 elections or sooner. The intelligence service alleged that significant media, lobbying, and administrative backing is being channeled to Magyar through German party funds, the European People’s Party, and Norwegian NGOs.
The SVR also accused Ukraine of assisting in destabilizing Hungary via its intelligence services and the local Ukrainian diaspora, allegedly in retaliation for Orban’s opposition to Kiev’s EU membership bid. Orban himself has previously accused Ukraine of trying to sway Hungary’s upcoming elections.
Brussels is reportedly angered by Orban’s efforts to steer EU decision-making and his refusal to align with the bloc’s stance on Ukraine. Hungary’s recent veto of the EU’s new seven-year budget — which Budapest claims promotes militarization and preparation for war with Russia — was described as the final straw for EU leaders.
Orban criticized the budget as “built on the logic of war,” saying it allocated “billions for Ukraine, crumbs for farmers and development,” with the aim of defeating Russia and expanding liberal influence.
Moscow has denied any plans to attack NATO or EU nations, accusing Western Europe of pursuing unchecked militarization aimed at confrontation with Russia.
