Merz Sheds Light on European, Ukrainian Interests
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized on Wednesday the critical importance of defending both European and Ukrainian priorities during the upcoming high-level meeting between the US and Russian presidents, set to take place in Alaska.
His remarks came during a joint press briefing in Berlin alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following a videoconference with US President Donald Trump.
Merz noted that the summit in Alaska, scheduled for Friday, could result in significant outcomes.
"We Europeans are therefore doing everything in our power to set the course for this meeting in the right direction. We want President Donald Trump to succeed on Friday in Anchorage,” he stated, highlighting the significance of the meeting in Alaska’s most populous city.
He stressed that “fundamental European and Ukrainian security interests must be safeguarded in Alaska.” According to Merz, this was the core message European representatives had communicated to the American president.
He added that there was strong alignment among European leaders in terms of their current assessment and the tangible goals for the summit.
The center-right chancellor pointed out that European officials had already presented their demands over the past weekend. In preparation for the summit, their senior foreign policy advisers have been holding in-depth discussions with the American side.
Merz reiterated Europe’s commitment to supporting the US effort.
“The American president knows that when the United States works toward peace in Ukraine that protects European and Ukrainian interests, then he can rely on our full support and count on it,” he declared.
He also detailed five key areas that represent Europe’s expectations from the forthcoming negotiations between the US and Russia.
