Tusk Urges Europe to Dissuade Trump from Trusting Russia
(MENAFN) Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, appealed to European nations on Wednesday to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump that Russia cannot be relied upon, as Trump prepares for a high-stakes summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska later this week.
"It's the most important thing that Europe convinces Donald Trump that one can't trust Russia," emphasized Tusk.
European heads of state showed cautious optimism after holding a virtual discussion with Trump earlier that day.
The meeting came in anticipation of Trump’s upcoming talks with Putin, which are expected to focus on resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The digital conference was organized by Germany.
In a media briefing following the online session, Tusk remarked that participants explored strategies to constructively impact the outcome of Trump’s dialogue with Putin.
He acknowledged that the August 15 meeting may not deliver an immediate breakthrough but could represent an initial move toward swift agreements regarding a potential ceasefire.
Tusk underlined that Poland's approach should serve as a model for how the international community engages in diplomacy concerning Ukraine.
He reiterated that a fundamental principle must be upheld — Russia should not be allowed to dictate the borders of neighboring sovereign states.
He also cautioned against Russia's efforts to introduce NATO's collective defense posture into the discussions and warned that Moscow may seek to decrease the deployment of allied forces, including those stationed in Poland.
Arguing that Russia should be compelled to support a fair and lasting resolution to the war in Ukraine, Tusk insisted that no outside party should impose terms that would amount to Ukraine effectively conceding defeat.
