Trump Warns Putin of Consequences
This warning comes as the two leaders are scheduled to meet soon in Anchorage, Alaska.
When questioned by journalists about potential repercussions for Russia should Putin reject calls to cease the conflict, Trump responded unequivocally, saying, "Yes, they will."
He emphasized again that "They will face very serious consequences" while speaking at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
These remarks were made just a few hours after Trump participated in an online conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and various European leaders.
The U.S. president described the meeting as "very good" and added, "I would rate it a 10, you know, very, very friendly."
The comments come as Trump prepares for his first direct engagement with Putin since beginning his second presidential term.
He revealed that the upcoming encounter in Alaska’s largest city could pave the way for a three-party discussion involving himself, Putin, and Zelenskyy.
"There's a very good chance that we're going to have a second meeting which will be more productive than the first," Trump noted, explaining that the initial summit would serve as a way to assess the current situation.
He continued, "If the first one goes okay, we'll have a quick second one. I would like to do it almost immediately, and we'll have a quick second meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy and myself, if they'd like to have it."
According to BBC News and CNN, the situation is being closely monitored, with international observers hopeful that the upcoming diplomatic engagements may lead to progress toward ending the war.
