Spain, Portugal Struggle with Widespread Wildfires
(MENAFN) Over the past 13 days, nearly 350,000 hectares (865,000 acres) of terrain have reportedly been consumed by flames in Spain, where the nation continues to combat 22 ongoing fires as of Wednesday.
According to a daily newspaper, which referenced data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), a total of 391,581 hectares (967,616 acres) have been scorched across Spain so far this year, with a significant portion—350,000 hectares—burning in just the last 13 days.
At present, 22 active fires pose the highest threat level nationwide, particularly affecting the autonomous regions of Galicia, Castile and Leon, and Extremadura.
Authorities have apprehended the suspected individual responsible for igniting three fires simultaneously on Tuesday in Madrid.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared that the government will officially designate the fire-affected areas as disaster zones starting next Tuesday.
Meanwhile, neighboring Portugal is also contending with at least four active wildfires as of early Wednesday.
Tragically, a 65-year-old man lost his life on Tuesday evening while battling a fire in Mirandela, located in the Braganca district.
The man died after being struck by the machine he was operating, according to another daily newspaper.
This fatality brings the wildfire death toll in Portugal to three.
