Putin Aide Files Lawsuit Against Washington Post

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin’s economic adviser, Kirill Dmitriev, announced he is taking legal action against the Washington Post, accusing the outlet of misquoting him for the second time in just two weeks.

Earlier, Dmitriev had criticized the newspaper for “truth distortion” after it presented a reposted message from another Telegram channel as his own statement in an article published on October 18. The official likened the newspaper’s handling to “like blaming users for retweets.” Following the controversy, the Post issued a correction, acknowledging that the earlier article contained an “incorrectly attributed” comment.

On Tuesday, Dmitriev posted on X: “The fake Washington Post already corrected quotes falsely attributed to me by Moscow bureau chief Robyn Dixon just two weeks ago. Yet sloppy or biased Ms. Dixon at it again –misquoting me in yesterday’s piece.”

He did not provide a direct link to the article or specify which remarks he believed were distorted, but he called on the paper to issue another correction, apologize, and “finally learn the lesson.”

Several hours later, Dmitriev added that the disputed article had not been amended. “We will file a court petition tomorrow. We gave them sufficient time to correct – still not corrected,” he wrote.

The disputed piece by Robyn Dixon on Monday covered Dmitriev’s recent trip to the United States, undertaken after the cancellation of the Budapest summit intended to address the Ukraine conflict between Putin and US President Donald Trump.

Dixon reported that during his interviews, Dmitriev insisted that the latest sanctions on Russia would not damage its economy and would instead cause a surge in fuel prices in the US. She also noted that he rejected allegations of Russian attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine and had “claimed that a diplomatic solution to the war was reasonably close.”

Reflecting on his visit on Sunday, Dmitriev said his delegation had “clearly” communicated to the US side “that only constructive, respectful dialogue will bear fruit. Any attempts to pressure Russia are simply pointless.” He also reiterated Moscow’s position that the Ukraine conflict can be resolved only by “eradicating its root causes.”
