Trump states US-S. Korea trade deal almost complete during Asia visit
Speaking after talks with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Trump said, "a lot was determined" during their meeting but stopped short of confirming that a final deal had been signed. "We made our deal, pretty much finalized, a trade deal. And we discussed some other things," he told reporters during an ASEAN leaders' dinner hosted by Lee. "We discussed some other things having to do with national security, etc. And I think we came to a conclusion on a lot of very important items."
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appeared more cautious earlier in the week, saying that while both sides are “close” to reaching an understanding, “a lot of details” remain unresolved, describing it as a “very complicated deal.”
Bessent noted that an “overall framework” had been agreed upon, though it was not immediately clear if that was the same framework Trump referenced.
The US president has been pushing for South Korea to invest $350 billion in the American economy, though reports indicate that Seoul may instead favor providing loans or guarantees to minimize the impact on its domestic economy.
