UN Chief Presses for De-escalation as U.S.–Venezuela Tensions Rise
Responding to questions about recent U.S. actions targeting Venezuela, Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the secretary-general is closely monitoring developments and actively engaging with relevant parties.
Haq said the secretary-general is urging all stakeholders to uphold their obligations under international law, including the UN Charter and other applicable legal frameworks, to protect regional stability. He added that Antonio Guterres believes disputes must be settled exclusively through peaceful means.
If Venezuela formally brings the matter before the United Nations, Haq said it would likely fall to members of the Security Council to consider the issue.
“At this stage,” Haq added, continued diplomatic engagement remains critical, with dialogue seen as the only viable path toward a peaceful resolution.
The comments follow a sharp escalation by Washington. On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had ordered a total blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers traveling to and from Venezuela, intensifying a months-long pressure campaign against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Caracas swiftly condemned the U.S. move, denouncing it as a violation of international law and pledging to raise the issue before the United Nations.
