US Senate Confirms Mullin to Head Homeland Security Department

(MENAFN) The US Senate on Monday approved Sen. Markwayne Mullin as the new head of the Department of Homeland Security, succeeding Kristi Noem.

President Donald Trump’s nominee was confirmed with a 54-45 vote.

Earlier in March, Trump selected Mullin to replace Noem, who had come under scrutiny following the January killings of Americans Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good in Minnesota by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Democrats had been calling for Noem’s removal and had also supported an impeachment resolution against her.

During his confirmation hearing last week, Oklahoma Republican Mullin pledged to “work hard to make the 280,000 DHS employees in the 22 agencies proud.”

Senators questioned Mullin about incidents that occurred under Noem’s leadership. Sen. Richard Blumenthal asked whether ICE would continue entering homes without judicial warrants. Mullin replied: “We will not enter a home or place of business without a judicial warrant unless we are pursuing an individual."

Sen. Maggie Hassan pressed him on how his approach would differ from Noem’s and whether he would authorize “lawless behavior.” Mullin responded: "I will operate within the parameters and the policies and the laws that you guys set for me."
