UK Meningitis Cases Increase to Twenty-Seven

(MENAFN) A fast-moving meningitis outbreak across south-east England has claimed two lives and infected at least 27 people, the UK Health Security Agency warned Thursday, with health officials cautioning that the case count is expected to climb further.

The toll escalated sharply within 48 hours — jumping from 20 confirmed and suspected cases on Tuesday to 27 by Wednesday. Of those, 15 have been laboratory confirmed while 12 remain under active investigation, the UKHSA said.

The outbreak has been traced to a nightclub in the city of Canterbury and has since spread across two universities and four schools in Kent, a county in south-east England, as well as a higher education institution in London.

The fatalities include a 21-year-old university student and a sixth-form pupil — losses that have deepened alarm among health authorities racing to contain the spread.

Professor Robin May, chief scientific officer of the UK Health Security Agency, signaled that the worst may not yet be over. "In outbreaks like this, you would typically expect a small increase in numbers still to go, so I suspect that number will go up slightly," he said.

Speaking separately to BBC Breakfast, Professor May described the situation as "very unusual."

In response, authorities have launched a targeted vaccination drive, offering the Meningitis B jab to approximately 5,000 students at the University of Kent. Physicians across England have also been placed on heightened alert and urged to watch for telltale symptoms — including fever, severe headache, rapid breathing, drowsiness, vomiting, a distinctive skin rash, and cold extremities.

Meningitis, an infection of the membranes encasing the brain and spinal cord, can turn fatal with alarming speed if left untreated.
