Iran Slams US Blockade of Ports, Questions Impact on Global Trade
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei questioned the logic of escalating economic pressure through shipping restrictions, according to comments shared on social media platform X.
“Can an illegal ‘war of choice’ be won through a ‘revenge of choice’ against the global economy?! Is it ever worthwhile to cut off one’s nose to spite one’s face?!” he wrote.
His remarks came after US President Donald Trump issued warnings that Iranian vessels approaching areas under a US-enforced blockade could face destruction, escalating tensions surrounding maritime access in the region.
Trump also claimed that Iran’s naval capabilities had been severely degraded and issued further warnings directed at remaining Iranian ships, according to statements shared online.
The US Central Command has begun operations to restrict maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports, stating that enforcement measures would apply to all vessels regardless of nationality.
Officials said the operation targets Iranian port activity in the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, while maintaining that navigation routes to non-Iranian destinations through the Strait of Hormuz would remain open.
Iran, however, argues that such actions risk destabilizing global trade and energy flows, warning of wider consequences beyond the immediate conflict.
