(MENAFN) The Trump administration is actively considering a sweeping proposal that would require the Pentagon to conduct formal safety evaluations of artificial intelligence models deployed across federal, state, and local government systems, media reported Tuesday — a move that would represent one of the most significant steps yet toward institutionalizing AI oversight at the national level.

According to the report, the White House's Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD) convened two separate meetings last week — one with technology and cybersecurity firms, and a second with broader tech industry groups — to confront the mounting security risks posed by increasingly powerful AI systems.

Washington is simultaneously exploring an executive order that would enlist multiple agencies in conducting safety assessments of next-generation AI models, the report added.

Notably, the groundwork for this regulatory framework was already being laid before Anthropic's Mythos entered the picture — though its release has since injected fresh urgency into the debate, triggering a new wave of cybersecurity concerns that have accelerated White House deliberations.

A White House official moved to temper expectations around the scope of ongoing discussions, stating that any policy announcement "will come directly from the president" and that discussion about "potential executive orders is speculation."

Since Anthropic unveiled Mythos, the White House has been racing to evaluate its hacking potential and determine what role the administration should assume in managing the most consequential national security risks the technology may present.
