Indonesia Imposes Social Media Restrictions for Under-16s
The enforcement, which took effect this weekend, follows growing alarm over children's screen time in the archipelago — where government data shows more than 80% of minors spend upward of seven hours online each day, and nearly half of all internet users are aged under 18.
Communications Minister Meutya Hafid confirmed late Friday that American platform X had already fallen in line with the new framework.
"X has announced that it would enforce a minimum user age of 16 in Indonesia. They have published this on their help center," Meutya told reporters at a Jakarta briefing.
X, which counted approximately 25.2 million Indonesian users as of early 2025, acknowledged the development on its help center, stating the age threshold is "not our choice — it's what Indonesian law requires."
The minister added that authorities retain the power to pursue enforcement action — including sanctions — against platforms that fail to comply with domestic regulations.
Separately, data indicates that 35.57% of younger children already have internet access, underscoring the urgency behind the policy shift.
Indonesia now joins Australia as only the second country globally to restrict minors' access to social media, after Canberra enacted comparable legislation last December — widely recognized as the world's first such law.
