US Officials Encourage UAE to Take over Iranian Island

(MENAFN) According to reports, some US officials have suggested that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) could seize an Iranian island in the Persian Gulf, as part of broader strategic discussions, the Telegraph reported citing unnamed sources.

The island identified in the report is Lavan, described as a major Iranian offshore oil export hub.

It reportedly hosts refinery facilities, storage infrastructure, and tanker-loading operations linked to key crude oil fields, and is also believed to sit above significant natural gas reserves.

The outlet stated that individuals within the circle of US President Donald Trump have floated the idea that the UAE could take control of the island. A former senior Trump security official was quoted as saying: “Go take ‘em! It would be UAE boots on the ground instead of US.”

The reported discussions come amid claims of increasing pressure in Washington to limit direct US military involvement as the conflict with Iran continues into its third month.

According to reports, Pentagon officials recently told Congress that the war has already cost the United States approximately $29 billion, largely driven by missile use and air defense operations.

Military analysts have also reportedly warned that sustained operations involving systems such as THAAD interceptors, Patriot batteries, and Tomahawk cruise missiles have significantly reduced US stockpiles.
