Provided by AGPBritain’s Ministry of Defense announced that the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) has been integrated into Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets currently operating in the region. The system is intended to improve the aircraft’s ability to intercept drones and other airborne threats while significantly reducing operational costs compared to existing missile systems.
According to the ministry, RAF Typhoon jets from 9 Squadron have already begun flying missions in the Middle East using the new system as part of operations aimed at protecting British interests and partner nations.
UK defense readiness and industry minister Luke Pollard said: “This has been a superb effort working with industry to test and deploy this system in a matter of months, which will help the RAF shoot down many more drones at a much lower cost.”
He added: “Our Typhoon fleet is the backbone of the UK and NATO air defense, with the RAF protecting Europe’s Eastern flank from Russian drone incursions and defending our partners across the Middle East.”
The APKWS relies on laser-guidance technology that converts unguided rockets into precision-guided weapons capable of targeting drones and other aerial threats more accurately.
British defense officials also emphasized that developing lower-cost air defense capabilities is becoming increasingly important as drones play a larger role in modern warfare and military operations worldwide.
