China Slams Japan-US-Australia Drills, Warns of Regional Risk
Jiang Bin, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, delivered the remarks after reports surfaced that Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force is holding a joint exercise with US and Australian forces across the Hokkaido and Kagoshima regions, according to China Daily.
"We firmly oppose this," Jiang said.
The trilateral drill, dubbed "Orient Shield 26," launched on Sept. 8 and is set to continue through Sept. 24.
Jiang argued the exercise is designed to advance the forward deployment of strategic offensive weapons under the guise of a "shield,” calling it a serious threat to regional peace and stability. He accused Japan of repeatedly violating the principles of its pacifist Constitution and its exclusively defense-oriented policy by developing long-range offensive weapons and accelerating what he described as "remilitarization" through overseas military exercises.
"Any move that fuels Japan's military ambitions will only plunge the region into a dangerous vortex and will eventually bring harm to the country itself," he said.
Jiang called on Japan, the United States, and Australia to "respect the security concerns of other countries, correct their erroneous practices, and contribute positively to regional peace and stability through concrete actions."
