UN Chief Arrives in Pakistan for Talks on Regional Diplomacy

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday for a three-day official visit focused on regional diplomacy, disaster preparedness and Pakistan’s role in international mediation.

Guterres arrived in Islamabad following an invitation from Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar. He was received upon arrival by Acting Foreign Secretary Nabeel Munir, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.

The visit, scheduled for Oct. 6-8, marks Guterres’ first trip to Pakistan since 2022, when he traveled to the country to visit areas severely affected by devastating floods.

During his stay, the UN chief is expected to hold meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Dar and army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Discussions are expected to cover a range of regional and international issues, including Pakistan’s diplomatic activities and its efforts to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran.

Guterres is also scheduled to visit Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority, where he will review measures taken by the country to improve disaster preparedness and strengthen resilience following the catastrophic floods of 2022.

The visit will also include a stop at the Islamabad headquarters of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, known as UNMOGIP. The mission was established in 1949 to monitor the ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the disputed Kashmir region.

Guterres’ meetings with Pakistani officials are expected to address Islamabad’s broader diplomatic role in regional affairs, including its efforts to support negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

The three-day visit comes as Pakistan continues to engage in diplomatic efforts on regional issues while working to strengthen its disaster response capabilities following the severe impact of past flooding.
